Christopher Newport’s Austin Chrismon (7-4), a Menchville High graduate, was named the d3baseball.com South Region Pitcher of the Year. He posted a 1.74 earned-run average and completed three of his 11 starts, striking out 86 in 78 innings.
CNU’s Justin Weaver and Lafayette High graduate Ryan Fleischmann joined Chrismon on the first team, and Bryan Bierlein and Billy Steel made the third team. ...
William and Mary sophomore and Chesapeake native Jason Inghram was named the CAA Pitcher of the Week. Inghram gave up one hit over seven shutout innings in the Tribe’s 14-0 win over Georgia State on Friday. The left-hander is 8-5 with a 2.53 earned-run average and is second in the CAA with 94 strikeouts.
Track and field:
A host of entries from the area will be competing in the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C.
Individual athletes had to be among the top 48 in their respective events and relays among the top 24 fastest to qualify. The top 12 individuals and relay performances at the NCAA East and West preliminary rounds will advance to the NCAA championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
A day after helping Virginia win its first NCAA team championship, third-seeded Jarmere Jenkins will begin the singles tournament against Georgia’s Ben Wagland, who beat him as part of a team semifinal. No. 2 seed Alex Domijan, also of U.Va., will meet South Carolina’s Tsvetan Mihov.
Mitchell Frank, who won the decisive match for the Cavaliers, will face No. 1 seed Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee, who retired with an ankle injury late in his team quarterfinal loss to Jenkins. U.Va.’s Mac Styslinger will fce Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman.
Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech will face Princeton’s Matija Pecotic, one of the 9-16 seeds. VCU’s Max Wennakoski will meet USC’s Ray Sarmiento, another 9-16 seed.
As with the men, the individual draws came out for the NCAA championships in Urbana, Ill.
In singles Wednesday, William and Mary’s Maria Belaya will face 20th-ranked Kyle McPhillips, who played No. 2 for UCLA’s semifinalist team. Julia Elbaba, U.Va.’s first seed in the singles tournament (9-16), will face Tennessee’s Brynn Boren. VCU’s Cindy Chala will take on Anne-Liz Jeukeng.
In doubles Thursday, Belaya and Jeltje Loomans will face 10th-ranked Pleun Burgmans and Plamena Kurteva of Auburn. Virginia’s Li Xi and Stephanie Nauta will play Pepperdine’s Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara.
Old Dominion stood 14th halfway through the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championship Semifinals in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The top nine of 18 teams after Wednesday’s racing will advance to Thursday’s and Friday’s championship competition.

ODU’s Chris Mecate and Jacob Henderson were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division I All-Academic Team.
Mecate, who qualified for the NCAA championships at 141 pounds, is majoring in communications. Henderson, a 197-pounder, is majoring in exercise science.
