The group includes a Hampton Roads contingent of state lawmakers, private sector officials and retired military brass.
The governor created the commission to find ways to keep and increase the military and national security presence in Virginia. Now that Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced he wants to close JFCOM, that issue becomes the group's immediate priority.
Chairing the group are former congressmen Tom Davis and Owen Pickett.
Legislative members include Sen. Jeffrey McWaters of Virginia Beach and Del. John Cosgrove of Chesapeake. Other General Assembly members are Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple, Arlington; Del. Mark Sickles, Fairfax and Del. Richard Anderson, Prince William County.
Citizen members include Sentara Healthcare CEO David L. Bernd, Norfolk; Barry DuVall, president/CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Newport News; Norfolk Southern President Wick Moorman, Norfolk; retired Vice Admiral Hank Giffin, Norfolk and retired Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Richard Inge, Williamsburg.
The special adviser to the commission is retired Adm. Harold W. Gehman Jr., Virginia Beach. He is a Norfolk native and a former head of JFCOM, as well as a former vice chief of naval operations.
