Expanding Sound Check's focus away from Hampton Roads, I see excitement building over the Interlocken Music Festival which will bring Neil Young, Zac Brown and Widespread Panic to an historic farm south of Charlottesville.
The festival will take place Sept. 5-8 at Oak Ridge Estate in Arrington, midway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. The full lineup also includes Furthur, The String Cheese Incident, The Black Crowes, Jimmy Cliff, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Punch Brothers, Gov't Mule, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Col. Bruce Hampton, The Hackensaw Boys, Founding Fathers, Love Canon and Keller & The Keels. See the full lineup here.
According to the event's website, there are no plans to sell single-day tickets. A four-day pass is on sale for $285.
"World class artists will perform on two side-by-side main stages, with no overlapping music," a new release below reported. "Charlottesville, Nelson County, and the surrounding areas are bracing for the huge impact Interlocken will bring. With thousands of attendees expected, local businesses are looking forward to a surge in sales."
Certainly, this has potential to be one of the bigger live music festivals to set up show in Virginia in recent memory. The lineup concentrates on classic-style guitar rock and blues, with extra flavor coming from jam bands like Furthur and String Cheese Incident and even some reggae and left-field bluegrass.
Rolling Stone's website published a story about the event last week in which festival founder Peter Shapiro says he constructed Interlocken in response to giant festivals like Bonnaroo, which takes place in Tennessee.
"If you've ever been to Bonnaroo and the others, it's almost overwhelming," he told Rolling Stone. "There can be seven stages, and there's often four bands you want to see all playing at once. You can even hear music from another stage in the back of your ear while watching one band. The performers on stage hear that too. It just bothers everybody."
When planning Interlocken, Shapiro decided to keep it simple and keep the music playing. "There are no DJ tents or side stages," Shapiro told Rolling Stone. "As soon as one band is done playing, the next begins immediately."
Here's a news release that talks about the buzz surrounding the festival.
