It's nice to see man's best friend isn't getting shortshrifted because of budget cuts.

The Navy announced Monday it has begun construction on a new kennel for military working dogs at the Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach.

The kennel construction is part of a bigger project for perimeter security and main entry improvements at the Annex.

The $16.2 million contract for the kennel, perimeter security and main entry improvements was awarded in September 2012 to Tetra Tech Tesoro in September 2012.

The kennel is expected to be completed by December, the Navy said, and once the dogs are moved, construction will begin on the new entry control facilities.
