According to the Prince William Times, and since picked up by other papers, state Sen. Charles Colgan won't seek re-election to the Virginia Senate.
Colgan, D-Manassas, is the Senate's oldest member and it's longest serving. Until Republicans re-organized the Senate Monday night, taking power from Democrats, he was the body's president pro tem. From Dan Roem at the Times:
It's a song all-too-familiar to Prince William County residents: state Sen. Chuck Colgan (D-29th) says he'll retire only to be talked into running for office again at the last minute by Democrats trying to capture or retain their majority.
This time, however, Colgan says means it.
Between this race next year, and a few others, control of the Senate will hang in the balance. Expect a battle.
