Each onboard chef was paired with a Virginia chef in a culinary contest that used Virginia and ethnic products, all coordinated by the Culinary Institute of Virginia. The Norwegians served smoked reindeer, the Spaniards cooked up a paella, and the Peruvians offered their signature seafood seviche.
Teams of judges ate aboard the ships on Saturday, and five finalists were chosen to compete on land Sunday.
The team of chefs aboard the Guayas from Ecuador, assisted by Scott Simpson of The Founders Inn of Virginia Beach, took home the trophy. Second place went to the American ship Godspeed, assisted by Chris Long of Second Street Bistro in Williamsburg. The Thor Heyerdahl of Norway, assisted by Carol Robbs of the Lizard Café of Norfolk, came in third.
