The electronic dance music, or EDM, revolution has officially reached the Peninsula. Staff at Hampton Coliseum announced Wednesday that Pretty Lights and Bassnectar, two of the genre's big names, will perform there Dec. 28 & 29.
Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Saturday. 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19.
Bassnectar is the stage name used by DJ, producer, and remixer Lorin Ashton. Closely associated with the dubstep style of dance music, Bassnectar released the CD "Vava Voom" this year.
Ashton's not crazy about the "next big thing" buzz surrounding EDM.
"I've been grinding in tiny towns since 2003, 2004, when there was no DJ scene because the rave scene had died and disintegrated and the new resurgence hadn't even begun," Ashton told Rolling Stone earlier this year. "There was nowhere to go, so I got really used to building my own fanbase and my own community."

Rolling Stone praised Pretty Lights’ performance at Electric Zoo in New York City, noting: “the real star on Friday was Colorado native Derek Smith, better known as the wildly unique and talented producer Pretty Lights,” while The New York Times observed: “the set by Pretty Lights…slowed to a hip-hop swagger and flaunted rough tones and raspy voices.”
Pretty Lights has given away more than 2.8 million free album downloads to date.
Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco-based DJ, producer and artist, who released his first album in 2001, and began the project as an open-sourced musical experiment exploring the interplay between music and community.
He is one of the longest standing and most respected artists in American EDM. He is the original long-hair behind the tables, having been in the game well before most of his contemporaries, and amassing an epic fan base with more than 250,000 tickets sold to his solo shows alone in 2011. His art brazenly oversteps the bounds of contemporary EDM, pulling from a dynamic array of source material and attracting lovers of all genres, from dubstep to metal, punk rock, hip hop, and all forms of EDM (drum & bass, trip hop, etc.) and beyond.
