Possible Arson Fire Destroys Vacant Newtown Mansion

NEWTOWN — A massive fire that destroyed a vacant mansion early Wednesday appears to have been intentionally set, a fire official said.

No one lives in the house on Castle Hill Road, although some work has been done on the sprawling property, including maintenance of fields nearby, said Fire Marshal Bill Halstead.

The fire was reported as a possible brush fire about 1:50 a.m. When firefighters got there, flames were "burning through the roof," he said.

Four of the town's five fire companies were sent to battle the blaze, while departments in neighboring towns brought in water and covered the unmanned fire stations, Halstead said.
