Hunger and poverty are rampant in our world, and escalating in the current economic conditions. Something can and must be done about them.
Our local CROP Hunger Walk is a great place to start. For a few hours and a few miles, friends and neighbors will be coming together to, in the words of I John 3:18, “...love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.”
Somerset Area Ministries is sponsoring this community wide event that begins at the Somerset High School Athletic Field and branches throughout the community at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The Somerset Area CROP Hunger Walk, 5K Run and Wii Walk will be held to show our love and active concern for neighbors in need near and far.
The participants, ranging from newborns to nonagenarians, will be raising awareness and funds to change the world in real and measurable ways -- digging wells that will bring clean water to villages; providing seeds and tools so that people can grow their own food; helping communities and families rebuild after disaster.
Whether it’s responding to flood and tornado damage in parts of the U.S., or helping to rebuild earthquake-damaged homes in Haiti, CROP Hunger Walks are making a difference.
There is a special promotion for the Wii Walk that I hope two families will take advantage of soon. Two EM’s Sub $30 gift cards are available for the first two families willing to host a Wii Walk using the Wii Sport game in their home and inviting friends and neighbors to gather donations for CROP and received after the event is occurs. Call the local committee chair the Rev. Dale Shunk at 814-445-5736 to claim the gift card and for details.
CROP Hunger Walk funds will benefit the overall work and ministry of Church World Service - working around the world to help those in need help themselves through refugee assistance, self-help development programs, advocacy, and disaster relief. And, it’s important to note that 25 percent of what we raise will help the county’s eight food pantries plus the Salvation Army Pantry in their important work here in Somerset County.
So please mark your calendars and join us rain or shine, whether as a walker or sponsor. Together – with your family, group, or congregation – we can change the world, one step at a time. Our theme is “We walk because they walk.”
You can register online today and begin gathering sponsors at www.churchworldservice.org/somersetpa. For additional information or to volunteer, please contact the Rev. Dale Shunk at First United Methodist Church by calling 814-445-5736 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.
