Game Commission news
HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe on Thursday applauded the enactment of legislation that will remove the requirement for hunters and trappers to display their licenses on an outer garment.
Keith Gillespie (R-York), was unanimously approved by the House on June 15, and was approved by a vote of 46-3 in the Senate. Gov. Tom Corbett signed the bill into law Thursday, which will take effect on Feb. 13.
Jenner Rod and Gun news
JENNERS — The Jenner Rod and Gun Club will hold its annual Christmas Treats event on Saturday.
Santa Claus will be at the club from 1 to 3 p.m. The club will close after 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 and will not reopen until 8 a.m., Dec. 26.
In other club news, the following officers were elected for the 2012 term: Dan Petrocelli, president; Jake Henry, vice president; Joe Mickolich, treasure; Karl Mickolich, financial secretary; Don Pugh, recording secretary; Chuck Vinosky, director; Todd Gardner, director; and Jack Hollis, director.
Also, the club announces that it stocked 500 ring-necked pheasants this hunting season.
Somerset takes two matches
SOMERSET — The Somerset Golden Eagle junior high wrestlers earned victories on back-to-back nights this week.
On Tuesday, the grapplers won a close battle with Central Cambria 45-37 and defeated Cambria Heights 55-39 on Wednesday.
Jansen Hemminger and Austin Hemminger earned pins Tuesday, along with Zach Halle. Wednesday night, Chase Marple, Jack Hause, Zach Tinkey, Zach Laue and Morgan Bell all won by fall.
BG 52, Somerset 24
ALTOONA — The Somerset junior high boys basketball team traveled to Bishop Guilfoyle for a demonstration in offensive rebounding Thursday.
The Marauders dominated the boards for a commanding 52-24 victory. Somerset droped to 1-1 on the season. The Eagles were led by Raven Beeman and Marcus Hart, who combined for 15 points.
The Marauders prevailed 33-17 in the JV game.
PIAA football championships
HERSHEY — The PIAA football championships will be broadcast live from Hersheypark Stadium on Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN).
The schedule is as follows:
Class A, Clairton vs. Southern Columbia, Friday at 1 p.m.
Class AAA, Archbishop Wood vs. Bishop McDevitt, Friday at 7 p.m.
Class AA Lancaster Catholic vs. Tyrone, Saturday at noon.
Class AAAA, Central Dauphin vs. North Penn, Saturday at 6 p.m.
WINDBER — The Windber Area Athletic Boosters Association will sponsor its first Girls Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Windber Area High School gym.
First round pairings feature Forest Hills and Westmont at 1 p.m. followed by Ligonier Valley and Windber at 2:30 p.m.
Consolation and championship games tip off at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
