Soundstage will open January events for Laurel Arts
A variety of events are planned at Laurel Arts this month. (Submitted photo)
This is always my least favorite time of the year as it seems the winter months stretch out before us with nothing to break up the monotony.
That's probably why my calendar has a photo of a tropical sunset and palm trees this month. Sometimes I just find myself staring at it and wishing I was there — but then I realize I better get this article written.
Although the rest of winter is ahead of us and seems to drag on, we here at Laurel Arts won't have time to get bored. This Friday at 7 p.m. is our monthly Soundstage, coffee house style, and the good news is the coffee maker is fixed. For those of you there in December, we did have a great time even without it though.
This month our host will be none other than me! But don't worry, I won't be singing or playing an instrument.
January Soundstage will be a jam night and I'm inviting all you talented musicians out there to come join myself and the some of the Soundstage regulars for a "free-for-all" evening of music.
I'm looking forward to hearing what I am sure is to be an eclectic evening of all genres of music. What a great way to warm up after Fire & Ice fireworks.
Should you want to be one of the participating musicians, please give me a call at 814-443-2433 for details.
Guests are welcome to bring their own refreshments and snacks. A nominal cover/donation will be charged to the public to offset costs. Coffee bar will be open.
Looking for something to do on a blustery January afternoon?
Come on over to the Dressler Center art galleries to check out the SCAA Member Show. I think sometimes we under-appreciate what artistic talents exist in our own backyard and this show is quite the collection of just that.
The galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tues. through Thurs., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sat.
Perhaps you would rather create some art of your own? Coming up on Jan. 14, you can paint your own winter landscape using the Bob Ross method in a one day workshop.
This class is taught by Al Just, certified Bob Ross instructor, and you can create your own painting in just one day. The workshop runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Can't make it this month? Another workshop will be held on Feb. 11.
Other classes coming up include photography and creating your own copper bowl. Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and tap dancing can help you keep warm, as well as fit during these cold winter months.
For preschoolers, Miss Marsha has a whole series of classes on habitats of the world starting with the desert on Jan. 13. The series continues with the ocean on Jan. 20, the arctic on Feb. 3 and the rainforest on Feb 17.
For ages 4 and up, there will be a Winter Fun Party on Jan. 28 and a Fancy Nancy Tea Party on Feb. 25.
Please call us at 814-443-2433 to sign up for any classes or with any questions about events and the galleries. In the meantime, stay warm!
