SOMERSET — Somerset opened its boys varsity tennis season with an impressive 3-2 victory over Bedford on Thursday.
Despite losing their first two singles matches, Somerset rallied with a doubles sweep to pull out the victory.
In doubles, No. 1 Marcel Schnalke and Shivam Patel won 1-6, 6-4, 6-4; and No. 2 doubles Jeremy Scheffel and Kody McKenzie won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
"We're returning three singles players and they are all seniors," Somerset coach John Harris said. "They are probably the best three players I've coached in a group.
"I'm real pleased with the doubles who have never played before. For them to sweep was a real nice start for them..
"Bedford is a team that we will have to beat if we want to go to states. We were fortunate to beat these guys."
Windber 4 Forest Hills 3
WINDBER — Windber opened its varsity tennis season with a 4-3 victory over visiting Forest Hills on Thursday.
"This is a nice way to start off the season with a young team," Windber coach Joe Podrebarac said. "I have no seniors on the squad, so the burden of getting wins falls into the hand of my top four players who are all juniors. They were able to get the job done today."
In singles, No. 1 Julian Gallina (FH) defeated Stephen Thomas 10-0; No. 2 Jake Hanley (W) defeated Michael Bodenshatz 10-4; No. 3 Adam Sube (W) defeated Chris Signarino 11-9; and No. 4 Nick Napora (W) defeated Scott George 10-3.
In doubles, No. 1 Gallina/Bodenshatz (FH) defeated Thomas/Sube 10-1; No. 2 Hanley/Napora (W) defeated Signarino/George 10-8; and No. 3 Ben Buchkovich/Avery Pakstis (FH) defeated Adam Feather/Nate Crognale 10-8.
Meyersdale 24, CT 13
MEYERSDALE — Gina Walker scored a game-high eight points to help Meyersdale defeat Conemaugh Township 24-13 in junior high girls basketball Thursday.
Katie Bolden and Jackie McKenzie contributed six points each for the Lady Red Raiders.
Kylee Doyle netted five points to pace the Lady Indians.
Meyersdale (5-1) will battle Turkeyfoot in the 72nd annual Somerset Lions Club Tournament on Saturday. Game time is 11 a.m.

MEYERSDALE — Riley Christner scored 15 points and Kent Meyers added 11 to pace Meyersdale's 37-34 victory over Conemaugh Township in junior high boys basketball Thursday.
