From a health standpoint, school lunches have never been an issue at Shade. We are offered fresh fruit and vegetables, along with cooked vegetables, every day. Students are outraged, however, with the fact that salt is no longer present on the condiments table. In addition, students are not in favor of smaller portions. Sometimes a school lunch is all a child eats for the day. Students feel like the government — and those in control — are trying to tell us how we should live our lives.

North Star's delectable school lunches have yet to be altered by the new regulations set in the act. The same choices as previous years have been offered so far this year in regards to entrées and sides, but the lunch ladies said to expect changes with next month’s menu. Starting in October, more varieties of fruits, veggies and whole grains will be given to students, and portion sizes for entrées will be smaller. Additional foods like salads, snacks and sandwiches will still be available for purchase. The North Star student body should mostly approve of the pending changes.
