Landfill hours cause another cleanup cancellation
Central City Borough (March 11, 2013)
Shade Landfill Inc. officials reduced hours to six hours per week. It is now open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, according to councilman Bob Sanzo.
The landfill is in Cairnbrook. It is owned by Waste Management.
Sanzo said the change was made at the beginning of the year because of a lack of customers. But the change has caused complications for local cleanup events.
Shade Township supervisors eliminated the cleanup during their meeting Thursday because of the reduced hours. Township supervisors said with small trucks and short hours, the cleanup is not cost effective.
The spring cleanup does not cost anything to the borough, Sanzo said.
The cleanup involved taking large refuse items to the landfill for borough residents, according to President Dan Dabbs.
"This is the first year we haven't done it in quite some time," he said.
Councilman Dan Bulger said the cleanup was helpful to residents.
"I'm just concerned that if we don't do that, we'll have refuse lying all over the street anyway," he said.
He said he did not think there were any other options besides eliminating the cleanup.
"If we went around and picked up the refuse, there's nothing we can do with it," he said.
The council made the decision to cancel the cleanup in a unanimous vote.
