It saves lives
Friday’s devastating earthquake in Japan was followed by tsunami waves that further damaged that country.
The tsunami swamped Hawaii’s beaches and damaged harbors in California, No lives were lost in the United States, in part because of the early warning system that sounded the alarm.
GOP-controlled House last month includes deep cuts for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s budget, which includes the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the alert just 10 minutes after the earthquake hit.
The agency’s funding is crucial to the nation’s preparation. NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said the cuts would be devastating.
Many federal programs help to save lives. The government needs to keep funding for NOAA in place.
