Meyersdale Parks and Recreation has completed $7,300 renovations to the Meyersdale Trail Hostel, thanks in part to a $2,000 spring 2011 grant awarded by the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and funded by the FBL Energy Meyersdale Wind Power Fund and the Benjamin Bosler Fund.
The remaining costs of the project were paid for by the Meyersdale Parks and Recreation organization. The project included various upgrades to the physical appearance and energy efficiency of the hostel, which is located in the basement of the Meyersdale Community Center.
The recent renovations to the Meyersdale Trail Hostel create much more attractive and operational overnight accommodations for tourists biking the Meyersdale stretch of the Allegheny Trail.
These tourists also frequent local attractions such as the renovated train station in Meyersdale, the Pennsylvania Maple Festival, Mount Davis, the Somerset County Fair, and the Flight 93 Memorial. With these hostel improvements, Meyersdale Parks and Recreation not only intends to increase the number of guests staying at the hostel but also to improve business and tourism in southern Somerset County.
