The USS Somerset, christened Saturday, honors Somerset County and the heroes of Flight 93.
Patrick White, president of the Families of Flight 93, said the families are honored to participate in the ceremony because the ship's two intended purposes, war and humanitarian relief, are reminiscent of the two faces of Sept. 11, 2001. The passengers and crew of Flight 93 fought back against the terrorists and the people of Somerset County showed their humanity by their response and their continued support of the Families of Flight 93 and the national memorial.
The naming of the ship adds to the sense of healing and finding hope from the tragedy of that day. There is also a time capsule in the ship with mementos from Somerset County, giving the county both emotional and physical connections to the USS Somerset.
It is a tribute to the heroes and to the people of Somerset County. It is a real honor, one that we should all take pride in.
