Berlin, Meyersdale, Somerset and Somerset County Technology Center (SCTC) students competed against one another in extemporaneous, creed, senior prepared, junior prepared, conservation and parliamentary procedure contests throughout the morning. The students who placed above third will compete at the regional FFA competition.
The advisers for the chapters are Dan Miller, Berlin; Doreen Jamison, Meyersdale; Dan Overdorff, Somerset; and Rob Harrold, Somerset County Technology Center (SCTC).
In the extemporaneous speaking contest, Catherine Metzgar, Berlin, won first place, followed by Courtney Brant, Meyersdale, in second; Levi Bowser, Berlin, third; Christian Tipton, Meyersdale, fourth; Courtney Smith, Berlin, fifth; and Brie Kabina, Somerset, sixth.
The judges for extemporaneous were Doyle Paul, former FFA adviser; Luke Dowdy, youth pastor at the Berlin Brethren Church; and Rev. Jay Shaffer.
Max Howard, Berlin, took first place in the conservation speaking contest. Autumn Bridge, Somerset, came in second, while Paige Stahl, Somerset, placed third; Brandon Glessner, Berlin, fourth; and Morgan Thomas, Berlin, fifth. The judges for conservation were Keith Largent and Don Williams, Somerset County Conservation District staff.
In the Junior Prepared contest, Jillian Svonavec, Somerset, took first place, followed by Julia Hay, Somerset, in second; Maddy Buss, Somerset, third; Mitchell Black, Berlin, fourth; Chelsea Klejka, Somerset, fifth; and Mark Bowser, SCTC, sixth. The judge for junior prepared was Margie Deaner.
In the senior prepared division, Megan Brown, Berlin, took first place, followed by Seth Landis, Somerset, in second; Elias Penny, Berlin, third; Keira Bechtel, Somerset, fourth; Courtney Brant, Meyersdale, fifth; Shawna Knopsnyder, Berlin, sixth. The judges for senior prepared were Norman
Menhorn and Amanda Gustkey.
In the creed speaking contest, Maddy Buss, Somerset, took first place honors, while Kendra Murray, Meyersdale, took second place, followed by Dakota Chonko, Berlin, in third; Alex Bruck, Berlin, fourth; and Brie Kabina, Somerset, fifth.
Judges for the creed contest were Cecil Lohr and Larry Cogan, Hilltop Growers.
The parliamentary procedure team that took first place honors was the Meyersdale Area FFA team including members Betty Jo Deal, Brittany Arnold, Courtney Brant, Taylor Brady, Katelin Michael and Brianna Hoyman. In parliamentary, Berlin came in second, Somerset in third and SCTC in fourth. Judges for the parliamentary procedure team were two Penn State University Collegiate FFA members.
