"It's a big relief to finally get it," said Berchick, who built a 9-1 lead before pinning the Panthers' James Kostick in 2:16 at 152 pounds. "It was a big goal at the beginning of my career. It kind of worked out perfectly to get it here at home. It's good to get it over with, now, before Christmas break, so I don't have that long wait."
Berchick is a two-time Class AA Southwest Regional qualifier, after placing third at the District 5 tournament in 2010 and 2011. He has his sights set on making it out of regionals this season and competing at the PIAA state tournament in March.
"March is a big deal this year for me," he said. "That's what I'm working for."
Berchick's career record stands at 100-20. He went 24-7 as a freshman, 32-7 as a sophomore and 32-6 as a junior.
"I'm happy for Cory and very proud of him," Conemaugh Township coach Jarod Feathers said. "He's meant a lot to our team. He's put in the hard work and it's paid off for him.
"I know there's a lot more accomplishments and goals that he wants to achieve as the season goes on."
The Indians built an 18-0 lead Thursday night and never looked back.
Taylor Cahill (138), Berchick (152), Andrew Gowarty (182), Kyle Drenner (195), Nick Holsopple (285), Kody Ofsanko (113) and Casey Berchick (126) posted pins. Mickey Sanders (120) won by decision. The Indians also received three forfeits.
Defending District 5 champion James Otten led Shade with a fall at 160 while Matthew Orner pulled out a 2-1 decision at 170.
"We're going into the (Christmas) break at 3-0," Feathers said. "We're very happy with that, but we know it's still real early (in the season). It gets a lot tougher from here. The goal is to get better each day, and give it all we got for the rest of the season."
