Alverda Mae “Abbie” Newcomer, 78, of Hollsopple, passed away on March 14, 2011 in Pittsburgh. Born Jan. 25, 1933, in Rockwood. The daughter of Lance and Pearl (Shoemaker) Coughenour. Preceded in death by parents and these siblings: George, Shirley and Pauline. Survived by loving husband of 57 years Herman B. “Ben” Newcomer and these children: Kathi Novak of Johnstown, Son-in-law Joseph Novak of Johnstown, Pam Newcomer of Hollsopple, Brian Newcomer of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gary Newcomer and wife Jennifer (Shroyer) of Harrisburg, also survived by grandchildren: Tricia Rygel (Ron), Janel Novak, Joe Novak (Krystal), Jason and Ashley Newcomer, Savannah and Dominick Newcomer, Great Grandchildren: Ty, Mason and Jolee Rygel. Sister of Judy Bittner (Verle), Glencoe. Abbie was a member of Women’s A Glow Prayer Group, The GJCF and Tuesday Morning Prayer Groups and an active member of Centennial United Methodist Church where she had formerly served as secretary and played the bells. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the George E. Mason Funeral Home, Inc., Davidsville and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at Centennial United Methodist Church until time of service at 11 a.m., Pastor Duane Slade, officiating. Committal in Lambertville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contribution be made in Abbie’s name to Centennial United Methodist Church.
