U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn ruled against Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's plan to take distribution of free food to homeless people out of the parks to the front of City Hall, and ultimately, indoors.
The judge said on Thursday that he saw no evidence of feeding homeless people outside City Hall was any better or more dignified than on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The judge's decision is a good one because he is giving the two sides up to a year to work out a better solution. When groups combine forces to create enough indoor dining centers, more people will be able to eat with greater dignity and comfort. They will be able to use the indoor restrooms, instead of relieving themselves on public property.
Perhaps they will be linked with services that will help them improve their lives. People will still be helped. And it will be done better.
