BLU, the Shedd Aquarium's fifth annual fete, hosted by the Auxiliary Board, was a sellout. One thousand "oceanistas" gathered on this balmy night to bask in the glow of the cool, colorful jellyfish.
The evening began with cocktails in the Shedd's historic aquarium galleries, with the VIP reception held in the Wild Reef exhibit. After enjoying tastings from some of Chicago's best restaurants, guests headed to the lower level for dessert. As if on cue, fireworks exploded over Navy Pier, adding a colorful backdrop to the dancing crowd.
The event raised $150,000, which will benefit the Shedd's education and conservation programs.
The Women's Board of the American Cancer Society mixed it up at its 26th annual fashion show. The show wowed the crowd with chic designer handbag-and-shoe collections from Saks Fifth Avenue.
About 400 supporters turned out for this event, which included a silent auction that would make any fashion lover swoon.
The evening began in the Red Lacquer Room at the Palmer House with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and then moved into the Grand Ballroom for the main event. Women's Board chairwoman Stacey Barrins welcomed the crowd, and then emcee Kathy Brock, of ABC Channel 7, introduced a video with clips of Usher, Jack Black and Justin Bieber sending out birthday wishes to all. (ACS is the "Official Sponsor of Birthdays.")
The event, led by chairwoman Bonita Friedland along with the dynamic 22-member women's board, raised $150,000 for the American Cancer Society, whose next event, Nov. 10, will feature Martha Stewart.
