Counting down to Lit Fest

An author presents at Printers Row Lit Fest

"What are three attributes that would make you a good addition to the Blockbuster Video team?"

Can you describe a random or unexpected experience you've had while promoting a book?

One time I gave a reading ... and people showed up!

How do you celebrate after you've finished a book?

I spike the manuscript like it's a football, then quietly reassemble it.

Marcus Sakey

What's your favorite font to write in?

Times New Roman. Courier is fun because it makes it look like you've accomplished so much, but eventually the heartbreak kicks in.

Do you listen to music while you write? What music?

At this point, I probably owe royalties. My last few books have been essentially scored by Clint Mansell, Max Richter, and Cliff Martinez. They compose beautiful, intense, and — importantly — instrumental music that's perfect for writing.

How do you celebrate after you've finished a book?

I'm a traditionalist. A lot of yelling and whooping, spin my wife around in a circle, and then head out for martinis and steak.

What's your favorite first line of a book? Last line?

That's easy: THE END. Any author who says differently is lying to you.

Bill Savage

What do you think of when you think of Chicago?

Edges and centers, borders and heartlands.

Who is an author you'd like to meet, dead or alive?

Richard Wright.

What's the worst question you've ever been asked in an interview?
