"I notice lots of _____ imagery in your book. Can you talk about that?"

What's your guilty pleasure reading?

I have no guilty pleasures.

Can you describe a random or unexpected experience you've had while promoting a book?

Being hit on.

I've been hit on, like, maybe twice in my life. So when it happens, I try to savor it.

What's your favorite font to write in?

Optima.

Do you listen to music while you write?

Never.

How do you celebrate after you've finished a book?

I didn't know at the time that the book was finished, so I didn't know to celebrate.

What's your favorite first line of a book? Last line?

I dunno, I really like the "Author's Note," in the front matter of "Brideshead Revisited." It reads: "I am not I; thou art not he or she; they are not they."

What book do you read over and over again?

The Daodejing.
