Do you listen to music while you write? What music?

No. I never listen to music when writing. Sometimes prose, and then I might have on anything by The Roots or any various musicians including the jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan.

How do you celebrate after you've finished a book?

By wondering what the hell I will write next!!!!!!

What's your favorite first line of a book? Last line?

First Line from Toni Cade Bambara's short story "My Man Bovane" which appears in "Gorilla, My Love":

"Blind people get a hummin jones if you noticed"

Last line from "The Flagellants" by Carlene Hatcher Polite

What book do you read over and over again?

"The Flagellants" by Carlene Hatcher Polite.

Cynthia Kallile

What do you think of when you think of Chicago?

The best city in the United States to live — sophisticated, friendly, beautiful weather and all!

Who is an author you'd like to meet, dead or alive?

I'd love to meet William Styron — for his brilliance and his willingness to share his battle with lifelong depression.

What's the worst question you've ever been asked in an interview?

I've had nothing but good questions. There's not too much controversy with delicious meatloaf cupcakes and the cookbook that tells all! But the most frequent question is... how did I ever come up with this idea!

What's your guilty pleasure reading?

This is an easy one ... TV Guide Magazine. I love to read up on all my favorite TV shows and their stars. Go "NCIS"!!
