One is a labor lawyer. Another heads a company that sells firefighting equipment. One runs a construction company.

Of the 11, only five have held elective office. And just one has any railroad experience.

They are the board of directors of Metra, one of the nation's biggest commuter rail systems, which provides more than 300,000 passenger trips a day and has a budget of about $868 million.

Here are their profiles and who appointed them.

Representing Chicago

LARRY HUGGINS (Chicago) Huggins was appointed by then-Mayor Richard Daley in 1997.

He is CEO of Riteway-Huggins Construction Services Inc.

Representing McHenry County

JACK SCHAFFER (Cary) Schaffer, who has served since 2006, was appointed by then-County Board Chairman Ken Koehler.

Schaffer, a Republican, was a longtime state senator, and served as commissioner of the Illinois Office of Banks and Real Estate.

A former lobbyist and consultant, Schaffer owns Liberty Outdoor Advertising and Liberty Self Storage, both in Crystal Lake.

Representing DuPage County

PAUL DARLEY (Elmhurst) Darley was appointed in 2011 by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

Darley is CEO of a company that manufactures firefighting equipment.

Representing Kane County

MIKE McCOY (Aurora) McCoy was named in 2011 by former board Chairwoman Karen McConnaughay.

A Republican, McCoy is also a former county chairman. He is an engineer.

Representing Will County

JACK PARTELOW (Naperville) Partelow was appointed in 2009 by County Executive Lawrence Walsh.

Partelow, who is retired, formerly was chairman of the Will County Republican Party and a vice president at Dunn and Bradstreet.
