Just more than a week before Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas, Tom Thibodeau said he expects Derrick Rose to play well and reiterated how much he hopes Rose makes the 12-man roster that plays in the FIBA World Cup of Basketball in Spain.
"Team USA will be terrific for him," said Thibodeau, who will be Mike Krzyzewski's assistant. "When you go back to his MVP year, he played with Team USA that summer (2010), and that prepared him very well for the season. He hasn't played in a long time, so it's a good opportunity to get that out of the way.
"It's a different role for him with this team because you're going to have 12 great players. He won't have the burden to play a lot of minutes and score a lot of points. He can just fit in, run the team. The way he ran the team in 2010 was a big part of why they won (gold)."
Because of two knee surgeries, Rose has played in just 50 NBA games over the last three seasons.
Also, USA Basketball has invited Doug McDermott to be on the Select team that will practice against the national team.
Roster roulette: Thibodeau is ecstatic over Kirk Hinrich's imminent re-signing for the $2.7 million "room exception."
"It was huge for us," Thibodeau said. "Basically, he saved us the last two seasons. With Derrick being out, he probably doesn't get enough credit.
"You really can't measure him statistically. But he has the ability to start at the point or (shooting guard). You can bring him off the bench and play him with Derrick. He adds a lot of toughness. He's a great leader."
The Bulls will add two more players, at least one a guard, via veteran's minimum exceptions or trade.
As for missing on Carmelo Anthony, Thibodeau didn't flinch.
"If we don't get somebody, I'm not disappointed," he said. "I just move on."
Layups: Thibodeau, on Carlos Boozer's departure: "When you look at four years and you win (205) games, he did a terrific job for us. Carlos has had a great career. We wish him nothing but the best. I think the Lakers will be a good fit for him." … Pau Gasol, on leaving the Lakers and Kobe Bryant: "It was difficult. We've been through a lot together. I'm sure I'll miss him. Our relationship goes beyond basketball. We'll always have a close friendship. He was very supportive and understood."
