Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church book club (HANDOUT / September 23, 2011)
We make a point to host Chicago authors when we can. We enjoyed talking with Jian Ping, author of "Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China," about growing up during China's Cultural Revolution.
"Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn was a favorite of ours. It was sometimes hard to read because of its descriptions of the deplorable conditions for so many women in the world, but we appreciated that it offered some practical ways to help.
Four books we've loved: "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri, "Song of the Lark" by Willa Cather, "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" by Marjane Satrapi and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith.
