Different Views Barrington book club. (HANDOUT / October 7, 2011)

Our club has been meeting for about 10 years. We started out with six neighbors and have expanded to 11 current members.

Our membership includes a lawyer, nurse, teacher, administrative assistant, freelance writer and small-business owner. Our diversity often supports lively discussions.

In the summer we read a romance novel from which we recount passages (some acting is required) by a member's pool.

We liked "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali because her experiences were so different than any we could ever have. She survived horrible circumstances and became an international leader for women's rights.

We did not like "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was unrelentingly sad and there was no redemption or finality to the story.

We would like to meet Kathryn Stockett, author of "The Help." We were impressed that she submitted her manuscript more than 60 times.

Some of our favorite titles include "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" by Lorna Landvik, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See and "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay.

Our next book: "Left Neglected" by Lisa Genova.
