Ridgewood Book Club (HANDOUT / October 7, 2011)
Our book club reads a variety of fiction and nonfiction. One of our members asks annually to have "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens put on the reading list. One of these days she is going to get her wish.
Our group loves going on field trips related to books. Last spring, before we read Colm Toibin's novel "Brooklyn," some of us attended "Colm Toibin in Conversation" at the Harold Washington Library. The discussion made the characters come to life.
We loved "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The writing style was clear and engaging. Stowe did a marvelous job of addressing the evils of slavery.
We would like to meet Andre Agassi, author of "Open: An Autobiography." We would ask him how he feels about his dad, who had been such an abusive parent, now that he is a father himself.
Four books we loved: "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen, "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant, "Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II" by Robert Kurson and "The Zookeeper's Wife" by Diane Ackerman.
