  9. Obama renews call to close Guantanamo prison

WASHINGTON — Confronted with a mass hunger strike and the use of forced feedings to keep inmates from starving, President Obama broke a long silence on the military prison for suspected foreign terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, declaring it "not sustainable" and making a strongly worded plea Tuesday for its closure.

  11. Today's Buzz: Should Obama close Gitmo?

President Obama said in a news conference this week that he was directing his staff to re-launch his effort to close the U.S. detention center for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and would look for allies in Congress to help. The prison has been controversial, both at home and abroad, since it opened in 2002 under former President George W. Bush. Critics say its prisoners have been denied their legal and human rights and tortured. Gitmo supporters say transferring prisoners to U.S. facilities would allow lawyers to shield them from justice or interrogation. Obama called for closing Gitmo in his first order after taking office in 2009, but Congress blocked him from transferring any detainees to the United States. Should Obama renew his effort? Should Congress support it? Has Gitmo outlived its usefulness? Should the U.S. deal with suspected terrorists in U.S. courts? Talk about it!

  15. Release Report On CIA's Use Of Torture

When I was a child, my parents made me and my brother say grace before meals. My mother is a preacher in the United Methodist Church, and my faith is part of my daily life. We often thanked God for our country. We expressed gratitude for our government leaders who valued freedom and for Founding Fathers who ascribed the rights of life and liberty to all.

  17. Erasing the stain of Guantanamo

At his news conference Tuesday, President Obama made a powerful plea for ending the humanitarian and diplomatic disaster created by the continued detention of more than 160 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, more than 100 of whom are engaged in a hunger strike that necessitated the dispatch of an emergency medical team. The problem is that Obama has contributed to the crisis by acquiescing in congressional obstruction of his promise to close the facility. We hope he is serious when he says he will now "re-engage with Congress that this is not in the best interest of the American people."
