Collena Wells evoked the memory of her son, 19-year-old Taiwo "Ty" Douglas-Wells, as she led a group of protesters through Southeast Newport News last weekend. She called on the marchers, and the larger community, to help halt the violence that plagues the city. We've heard that call echo around the community before. Violence here follows a familiar path: A shooting death provokes sorrow and outrage, which manifest into calls for action. Commitments are made, assurances given, but precious little is ultimately done. It's as though the city is resigned to accept a certain level of violence, centralized in a few troubled neighborhoods.
