Eager to prove their bona fides to Connecticut’s half-a-million gun owners — an active part of a conservative base that reliably turns out for primaries — top Republican office seekers have applied for pistol permits, hit the shooting range and even dined on game.

But no one has more aggressively courted Second Amendment voters than Tim Herbst, the runner-up for the state GOP’s endorsement for governor and owner of a Glock 27 handgun.
