Garry McCarthy

Garry McCarthy was selected as Chicago police superintendent in May 2011 by Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel. McCarthy, who was a finalist for superintendent in 2003, had been the top cop in Newark, N.J. McCarthy began his career in the New York Police Department, where he rose to prominence as a commander during the mid-1990s. He was hired to lead Newark’s department in 2006. McCarthy grew up in an Irish Catholic family, the son of an NYPD detective and brother of a state trooper, attended a Catholic high school in the city and joined the police force just months after graduating from a state university. He was born May 4, 1959.
