Chicago Police Department

Established in the 1830s, the Chicago Police Department is the third-largest in the country with more than 12,000 employees. Since 2011, Garry McCarthy has served as superintendent. After homicides spiked in 2012, garnering Chicago national attention, the department has employed a strategy of flooding the city's violence-prone areas with additional officers in the summer, known as the Summer Surge Overtime Initiative.
