State Supreme Court Upholds Gang-Rape Conviction

HARTFORD — A trial court judge violated a gang-rape defendant's constitutional right to present a defense by limiting cross-examination of the victim, but the error wasn't significant enough to overturn his convictions, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled Monday in a case testing the state's rape shield law.

The law, passed in the early 1980s, bars or limits evidence of a victim's prior sexual conduct, with certain exceptions. It was designed to protect victims by shielding their privacy and allowing them to testify in court without fear of embarrassment.
