An 81-year-old pedestrian died this morning following a traffic crash in south suburban Merrionette Park.

At 6:14 a.m. about twelve firefighters and paramedics responded to the 3100 block of West 115th Street for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle, said Merrionette Park Fire Dept. Asst. Chief Richard McNicholas.

Eight to 12 minutes later, the woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, McNicholas said.

Joan McElroy, of the 3100 block of West 115th Street, was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m. at Advocate Christ medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

No one else was injured, the assistant chief said.

Crews remained on the scene for another 45 minutes to clear the wreckage.

McNicholas did not have further details about the crash and police were not available.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
