World Music Festival Chicago to feature 62 acts

Vieux Farka Toure (from Mali), Bombino (Niger) and Pablo Menendez & Mezcla (Cuba) will headline the 16th annual World Music Festival Chicago, running Sept. 11 through 21 in venues across the city.

The festival, presented by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, will feature 62 attractions from 33 countries in 20 locales. This will include a four-night series in the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park; an overnight marathon of Indian classical music at the Chicago Cultural Center; and a grand finale “One World Under One Roof” open house at the Chicago Cultural Center, from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 21.

Among the attractions: Vieux Farka Toure and Bombino opening the festival at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Pritzker Pavilion; “Ragamala: A Celebration of Indian Classical Music,” 9 p.m. Sept. 12 to 9 a.m. Sept. 13 at the Chicago Cultural Center; Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Nigeria), 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Pritzker Pavilion; Nicolae Feraru & His Gypsy Band (Romania/Chicago) and Calypso Rose with Kobo Town (music of Trinidad and Tobago/Canada), 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Pritzker Pavilion; Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (Italy), 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Old Town School of Folk Music; Derek Gripper (South Africa) with the Goran Ivanovic Trio (Croatia, Serbia/Chicago), 9 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Hideout; and Boban and the Marko Markovic Orkestar (Serbia), 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at Constellation. Many of the performers will appear in more than one concert.

Other venues will include the Beverly Arts Center, City Winery, DePaul University Concert Hall, Humboldt Park Boathouse, Indian Boundary Park, Martyrs’, Mayne Stage, National Museum of Mexican Art, Northeastern Illinois University, University of Chicago’s Logan Center for the Arts, Schubas, Thalia Hall and the Hideout.
