Worker injured while performing work in manhole on South Side

A man was taken to a hospital in serious-to-critical condition after he became unconscious while working on electrical cables underground at at a construction site this afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood.

Chicago Fire Department companies were called to the 7600 block of South Coles Avenue at 2:30 p.m. where the man was working in a manhole and  became unconscious, said Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford.

Firefighters had to use special equipment to pull the man out before taking him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, officials said.

The man sustained head trauma and eventually regained consciousness, Langford said.
