One woman was injured in an extra-alarm fire on the West Side early Thursday morning.

She was brought from the scene of the fire, in the 1400 block of South Kenneth Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood, to Loretto Hospital with complications from asthma, fire department spokesman Will Knight said.

The second alarm, which brought more firefighters, equipment and ambulances to the scene, was struck out about 7:30 a.m, Knight said.

The 3-story brick apartment building that burned was vacant, and it's not clear whether the woman was staying there or was a neighborhood resident.

The fire started before 6 a.m. The lower-level windows on the building that caught fire and at least one neighborhing building are boarded up, and a number of windows in the upper floors of both buildings are broken.
