This week’s Theater Loop Showcase is “Chicago’s Golden Soul.” Currently playing at Black Ensemble Theater, the energetic and informative show is a revue of the many songs recorded in Chicago during the city’s heyday as a soul music heavyweight — roughly 1964 to 1979. Here, Alanna Taylor performs “All I Could Do Was Cry,” a solemn ballad written by Billy Davis, Berry Gordy and Gwen Gordy, made famous by singer Etta James. "Chicago's Golden Soul" plays the Black Ensemble Theater, 4450 N. Clark St., through March 30. Chris Jones has the review.
We filmed this video, a song from the show, in our studio in Tribune Tower.
