Will County prosecutors have filed felony DUI charges against a University Park man who was driving a car that struck a tree in March, killing two passengers.
Prosecutors upgraded the charges against Velar Mayfield, 24, who was behind the wheel of a green 1996 Dodge during the March 6 crash in Crete Township near the Illinois-Indiana border. Mayfield was charged Dec. 16 with four felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence of marijuana.
Two passengers, Sarah Shepard, 21, of Park Forest, and Cheyenne Cardosi, 21 of Cedar Lake, Ind., died as a result of the crash.
Authorities said at the time that Mayfield was driving east on Bemes Road when he hit a patch of ice, losing control of his car and striking a tree in the 3000 block.
Mayfield is being held on $100,000 bail. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 6.
