A large tree fell on a group of people exiting a South Side church where they had been attending funeral services this afternoon, authorities said.

Six people were taken to the hospital, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The incident occurred at 12:42 p.m. in the 8400 block of South Maryland Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The victims were leaving a church at the time, after funeral services, he said.

Two people were in fair-to-serious condition while four were in good condition when they were taken to hospitals, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

Chicago Fire Department Chief Kevin MacGregor said the victims' injuries were "fairly minor."

One person was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park, while two people were taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition and two people were taken to South Shore Hospital, also in good condition, said MacGregor.
