A 15-year-old boy was shot dead and seven others were shot between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning across the city, police said.
The boy, identified as Patrick Sykes by the Cook County medical examiner's offices, was shot several times around 12:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of West 85th Street, police said.
Sykes was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He lived in the 8500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, about a block away from where he was killed.
Police said witnesses at the scene gave conflicting accounts - his shooters were either on foot or bicycles - and that the boy had been shot three times.

Two people were taken into custody for questioning but released without charges late Thursday night, police said.
An 18-year-old man was also shot early Friday morning, just after midnight, in the 12700 block of South Wallace Avenue. He ran to the 12600 block of South Eggleston Avenue and called police, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
About 10 p.m., three women shot in the 1300 block of West Washburne Avenue. All were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.
A 19-year-old was shot in the pelvis, buttocks and both wrists, and is stable condition. A 21-year-old is in good condition with a wound to her ankle. Another 21-year-old was treated and released with a wound to her arm.
Someone shot a man, either 20 or 21, about 9:45 p.m. in the 700 block of West Garfield Boulevard in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The man was hit in the leg and taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center in good condition, police said.
At 2:10 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the knee in the 2700 block of West 64th Street, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss. Police had no information about the circumstances of the shooting.
About 1:40 p.m., a 22-year-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 7400 block of South Emerald Avenue. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and was in good email@example.com
