Portraits of Kenwood Academy musicians
For the past three months, the band students at Kenwood Academy have prepared for the biggest show of their lives: They appeared at Symphony Center on May 30 in collaboration with MacArthur "genius grant" pianist Jason Moran and the eminent Chicago artist Theaster Gates.

Aisha Turay, 17, senior, saxophone. "I heard the jazz band play, and they were (featuring) soprano saxophone, and I loved the sound. ... I asked Mr. Powell, and he said the only way I could play soprano saxophone is to be in the jazz band. So I joined the jazz band. ... The setting was different than concert band. It's like more fun, more relaxed. ... You can be yourself in jazz band, and you can express yourself a lot easier."
