Paralyzed man dies in Calumet City fire

A 32-year-old man died early this morning in a fire at his Calumet City home, police in south suburban city said.

The man was identified as Eric Salazar, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police and firefighters responded to the Salazar's home in the 1300 block of Imperial Avenue at about 4:55 a.m., according to a police statement. A neighbor had reported hearing the sound of glass breaking in the rear of the building and saw flames coming from a window.

Salazar, who police said was paralyzed and had to use a wheelchair, was found in a back bedroom, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said the cause of the fire was "possibly electrical," but they are continuing to investigate.
