A man died in a vehicle left stranded on the Kennedy Expressway near the West Loop, authorities said this morning.

The vehicle containing four people stopped in the southbound lanes of the expressway near Chicago Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, when it ran out of gas, according to the Illinois State police.

While two occupants left the vehicle to retrieve gas, one of the two who remained called 911 when their companion -- a 45-year-old Chicago man -- became unresponsive, according to State Trooper Mark Hall.

Paramedics arrived at the scene but weren't able to revive the man, who died there, Hall said.

It was unclear what led to the death.

Authorities didn't immediately release the person's identity.
