Mourners were in tears as they gathered today around a small wooden casket outside St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Naperville following a funeral mass for 7-year-old Justin Plackowski.
The child's mother, Elzbieta "Magda" Plackowska, is accused of fatally stabbing her son inside a Naperville town home last week, authorities say.
Plackowska, who allegedly said she killed her son to get back at her husband, also stabbed and killed 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski whom she was babysitting, according to authorities.
Plackowska, 40, was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbings.
A sign on the church door read "private funeral" and the media was asked to remain outside.
Justin was in third-grade at Scott Elementary in Naperville. Olivia attended kindergarten at Brookdale Elementary.
A private memorial service has been arranged for Olivia, according to a statement released by the family.
"We are deeply saddened and shocked by the shortened life of our sweet little girl, Olivia," the statement said. "It is impossible for us to express in words the sadness we feel over this senseless killing. We can, however, express our gratitude for the support from our community, our church, Olivia’s school and others."
Donations to a memorial fund for Olivia can be made at the Naperville Bank & Trust by using the Internet site, banknaperville.com, or by mailing a donation to the Olivia Dworakowski Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 294, Naperville, Ill., 60566.
