A 16-year-old boy walking on Int. Hwy. 55 this morning was killed when a vehicle struck him near southwest suburban Shorewood, authorities said.

The boy's name has not been made public yet, but he is from southwest suburban Plainfield and was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. on the scene, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

He was a pedestrian who was hit by a northbound vehicle on I-55, according to the coroner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Brad Sprague said the crash happened at 1:49 a.m. near Black Road, just north of U.S. 52 near Shorewood It was not a hit-and-run, but authorities are trying to figure out why the boy was on the road.

The road was closed for about two hours after the wreck and Sprague said it was not known if there were any citations written.

"It's still under investigation," Sprague said of the crash.
