Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville was closed today after police received an anonymous bomb threat about the area, according to forest preserve officials.
Chief John Tannahill of the Lake County Forest Preserves Ranger Police said the department received a threat Tuesday via mail. The letter allegedly targeted popular areas of the Independence Grove Forest Preserve, such as the marina and beach, he said.
Officials shut down the park yesterday shortly after 6 p.m., Tannahill said. Sue Hawkins, public affairs manager for the Lake County Forest Preserves, said the preserve will remain closed until police finish their investigation into the threat. Police were stationed in front of the gates to the forest preserve on Wednesday turning people away.
Crews are going through the park to secure it, according to Tannahill, but he said he does not believe anyone is in imminent danger.
